The Future is Here

I don't post a lot about what I do for a living (I mean, what I do besides being a mom, wife and Brooklynite), but after seeing the presentation Business Insider did about about the Future of Media I felt compelled to do so.

They have outlined some crazy numbers comparing New Media (Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, etc) compared to Old Media (NBC, Comcast, Disney, etc) and the digital wave is killing them.
As Old Media is trying to figure out how to survive in the new digital world, I think they are making a fundamental mistake..... they are looking at them separately. The analog and digital convergence is here and media companies need to rip off the band-aid and give consumers what they want, when they want it and how they want it. It's that simple.

Check out the preso here.

Why I love my neighborhood #3 - The "Lebron Can Suck It" sale

Yet another reason to love my neighborhood.

I just received an email from local wine store Smith & Vine who have decided to have a sale in support of one of their employees who happens to be from Ohio. The Heat are entering the Cleveland arena tonight and Cavalier fans will not be happy.

ha!

Dylan the Model

So, Dylan got stopped on the street the other day by someone who worked for Wilhelmina Models and said that Dylan would be perfect for a Benetton ad that was currently being cast. She gave us the email for the casting director who thought Dylan would be a good fit so we went down to the agency to take a few more photos.

Of course, there were a hundred other kids there, but Dylan was the cutest. No idea if it's gonna happen or not and I don't really care since we're just doing it for fun. But it would be fun to get the photos and the free clothes!

If nothing else, we got a great "head shot" out of it.

Brooklyn Tornado

Holy Tornado Batman! Right here in Brooklyn. Dan and Dylan got caught in it and came home a bit freak out. I missed it all. Was heading home from the city and by the time I got to Brooklyn it wasn't even raining!

Check out these photos from BococaLand.

(p.s. the photo above is not from this week's tornado. It is actually from 1976 but the photo is so cool, I had to post it.)

Auto Tune Remixes

I seem to be a late on a lot of things recently. One of them is the new trend of taking the latest pop culture or news topic and turning it into an auto tuned music video.

Not sure why I think these are so funny, but sometimes you can just find pleasure in simple (stupid?) things.

Here are some of my faves:

The Bed Intruder Song. The more I watch this one, the funnier it gets. I'm not the only one who thinks so. This sucker's got over 22 Million views!

of course The Quran Guy has one!

oh, Bieber.

Not My Kid

Dylan has started to enjoy spending time in her room since it is the one place in the house since she can play with anything without someone saying "don't touch that!". So, now I have a new obsession.... Re-doing her room.

I never really completed it in the first place so I have spend the last year saying that "one day" I will complete her room. Well, I can't procrastinate anymore and "someday" is here.

So, I have begun my research. A project that should take one weekend will end up taking me months due to my lack of motivation and commitment. While researching ideas for Dylan's "big girl room", I decided to venture beyond ohdeedoh and do a quick Google search. What I found was a world that verified people have WAY too much time on their hands and spend WAY to much money on their kids. I'll post the good ideas I see.

In the meantime, check out the Cinderella Bed. Can you imaging what this kid is like?

Why I love my neighborhood #2 - Vespa Cops!

There's been a lot of reports recently about people getting their iPhone snatched around my neighborhood of Carroll Gardens.

It seems some fellow do-gooders were ready for action when a couple on vespas saw a woman have her phone snatch while walking her dog. They sprang into action and chased down the perpetrators. The vespa riding woman jumped off her scooter and got the phone back!

The cops found the 13 and 16 year olds later that night.

Kids, are you bored and ready to go back to school?

WiFi Communications

What a great idea for NYCer's with annoying neighbors.

Ever want to tell your neighbors to stop playing Rock Band at 2am or that the car alarm that keeps going off is not doing anything to distract a burglar? Well, here's an idea. Just tell them via your WiFi network ID. That way, you're not the asshole. Your network is. Genius.

Thanks to Bococaland for the tip.

New Outbrain Post

I just wrote a new post on the Outbrain blog. A short bit about how advertisers haven't quite figured out how to find moms like me. Check it out and let me know what you think!

John Mayer is Funny

I know. I'm not supposed to like John Mayer.
I will admit he is a good song writer but I don't his music.
What I do like is his blog and Twitter stream.

@johncmayer, your funny. How did you get this picture?

Why I love my neighborhood #1

There are so many reasons to love my neighborhood.

So, I decided to begin a list of all the reasons why. This isn't my #1 reason, just the first in what is expected to be a really long list.

Reason #1: Because there is a stuffed fish hanging out in the garden in front of our local police station.

When walking by the Brooklyn 76th Police Precinct on Union today, I noticed a brightly colored fish. Why? Why not?!?

Party on Smith Street

We had a great time at the Smith Street Festival. Drinking, eating and dancing is the best way to spend a Sunday. Dylan tried her first ear of corn and loved it. A little too much. She doesn't understand you are only supposed to eat the kernals. Instead, she ate the entire top!

Black Bean Cakes

Need a quick dinner for the munchkin? Here's a good one that uses kitchen staples and will make the whole family happy.

Black Bean Cakes

1 can black beans (drained)
1 egg
1 handful grated cheddar cheese
2 handfuls bread crumbs (more if needed to form the patty)
1 tsp. cumin
1/4 cup frozen corn (defrosted)
Sour Cream (optional)
Avocado/Guacamole (optional)

Combine all ingredients except for the corn in a mini-food processor and pulse until blended. I like to keep a nice texture so try not to full puree the beans.
Once blended, stir in corn.

Heat a skillet with cooking spray (I use TJ's Olive Oil spray).
Form the patties whatever size you like and put cook for about 3 minutes on each side or until they are slightly brown on each side.

Top with sour cream and/or avocado.

Your kid and family will eat them up! Yum!

Robo Stir

I've seen it all. For only $19.99 you can have the Robo Stir. "It stirs so you don't have to". I mean, have we really become that lazy?

I will admit it's brilliant if you're making a roux, but does it really work?

Growler Saturday

What's better than hanging out with friends, drinking beer and watching football?
Umm..... nothing?

Although it isn't Fall, it is World Cup Time which means it's Fun Time in Brooklyn. We spend the day with friends over at Triple J's house and everyone had a great time.

Thanks to J, J and J for hosting a rockin' party. We'll have to pick another team for the WC since the USA lost. We still need a reason for Growlers Saturdays and still waiting to try Caputo's pizza dough. Did you know such a thing exists?

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck

After weeks of following the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck on Twitter, I finally found the time to take the loooong walk across the park and try it out. Boy, was it worth it! He's got WASABI PEAS as a topping!

I've been obsessed with The Salty Pimp so that's what I tried. YUM! Something about salt on top of ice cream dipped in chocolate. I can't describe it. You just have to try it.

It's 5:30am. Still no gym

What is it about me? I need to lose this last 12lbs. of pregnancy weight. In 7 weeks, I am getting in a bathing suit for the first time in over 2 years. I go to bed at 9:30 every night, wake up at 5:30, but somehow still can't "find the time" to workout. Is it laziness? Sure. Is it procrastination, absolutely. But it's also the hour and a 1/2 I get to spend by myself every morning doing what I want to do. This is the best part.

Now, if I can only figure out how to make that special time about exercise! It's coming next week, right?

Excuse me while I go get another cup of coffee.

Super Bowl Saints!

I just checked out my "blog". You know, the one I never post on? Well, it seems after Katrina, there was much hype and anticipate around the Saints. I'm happy to see that 5 years later it's panned out.

Not sure if you've heard or not, but THE SAINTS WON THE SUPER BOWL!
